A cup with a fruit print, a straw or its own lid says "someone's everyday thing," the kind of object you'd buy for your own kitchen rather than hand to a coworker — a cherry print or a strawberry print fail this the same way, and so does anything built around drinking through a straw. A heart, obviously, says something you don't mean to say at work. A licensed character or a fandom object says something about assumed taste, which is exactly the kind of guess a bow makes, just aimed at a different shelf.
